Diaper Free!

Many cultures do not use diapers. They teach their babies to give a signal.

Natural Infant Hygiene and Elimination Communication are terms coined by author Ingrid Bauer, author of Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene to define an ancient, natural child care practice for contemporary parents. Her book and website describe a gentle, compassionate and practical way to care for a baby's elimination needs from infancy, with or without diapers.

"People are surprised to learn that my son stopped wearing diapers consistently when he was four months old. They sometimes assume this means he simply relieved himself wherever, whenever, while I cleaned up after him. They often find it hard to believe that he was aware of his need to eliminate and that we were able to communicate about it long before he spoke his first words. Even those who watched me respond to his signals, and he to mine, still occasionally shook their heads and exclaimed, 'But that's not possible!'" Read more...

This well-designed site includes the book introduction, inspiring articles, a Natural Infant Hygiene FAQ, and related links. Ingrid's book and Maya Wrap Baby Carriers can be ordered by phone. The site is relatively new, and more articles and book excerpts will be added soon.
