Millions of children are being labeled "ADD" and
"ADHD" on the sole basis of short, subjective lists of
troublesome behavior, and given potent, addictive drugs. Studies
claiming to have found brain damage in ADHD-labeled children have
ignored the effects of the drugs given to such children prior to
the study. There is clearly a need to distinguish between
so-called learning disabilities and true neurological disorders.
A long-time opponent of the ADD/ADHD "diagnosis" and
the over-prescription of psychiatric medication, Dr. Fred Baughman
has practiced as a neurologist for 35 years. Devoted to furthering
the well-being of children, he is in the forefront of the movement
to bring clarity and sense into the area of learning disabilities.
His articles have appeared in leading medical journals as well as
regular print media, he has testified for victimized families in
ADHD and Ritalin cases, and he has appeared on radio shows to
discuss his belief that ADHD "should not be classified as a
disease or treated as one."
Dr. Baughman states that "All physicians know that the
presence of any bona fide disease is confirmed by an objective
finding – a physical or chemical abnormality," and that
"ADD, ADHD and other similar labels lack the criteria for
genuine medical disorder or syndrome. Once children are labeled
with ADHD, they are no longer treated as normal. Once Ritalin or
any psychotropic drug courses through their brain and body, they
are, for the first time, physically, neurologically and
biologically, abnormal."
The website includes the doctor's comments
on recent news issues, responses
to questions that he has received on
related subjects, and the text of a special
report to the Committee on Education
and the Workforce, "Behavioral Drugs in Schools: Questions
and Concerns" presented in Washington, DC in 2000. He has
provided advocacy help for families in legal cases, and includes
an email
form on the site.
Dr. Baughman's website is an oasis of sanity in a society
convinced of the validity of ADD/ADHD, and thus offers hope that
we will some day stop seeing millions of "disabled"
children, and instead begin to see normal children trying
valiantly to survive in an abnormal world.
