"The Baby Borrowers"
letter-writing campaign
Jan Hunt has written an open
letter to NBC protesting their new show, "The Baby
Borrowers", scheduled to start on June 25. Please read
Jan's letter, and if you are also concerned, write to NBC and
ask others to do the same.
New Article:
Shyness
When
a Child Feels Shy by Jan Hunt
"Many children feel uncomfortable
with new people until they have gotten to know them better. Many
adults are the same way. And in the world today, it is not
always a bad thing for a child to be wary of strangers. Pushing
a child to be more open is likely to lead to self-consciousness
and even more shyness in future situations. How can we best
support a child when they are feeling shy?"
New Article:
Divorce
Protecting
a Child's Emotional Development When Parents Divorce by
Peter Haiman
"The child from birth to six is by
nature vulnerable. During divorce and separation, the child's
emotional well-being is at considerable risk. There are
important issues that should be considered. First, it is
important to ensure that the child has continuous and ready
access to the parent with whom the child has developed an
emotional attachment..."
Quote of the
Month
"Little children love the world. That
is why they are so good at learning about it. For it is love,
not tricks and techniques of thought, that lies at the heart of
all true learning. Can we bring ourselves to let children learn
and grow through that love?" - John Holt, How
Children Learn

AP Research:
Breastfeeding and sleep
Breastfeeding
Increases Sleep Duration of New Parents
A study at the School of Nursing at the
University of California, San Francisco, found that parents of
infants who were breastfed in the evening and/or at night slept
an average of 40-45 minutes more than parents of infants given
formula. Parents of formula-fed infants also reported more sleep
disturbance than parents of infants exclusively breast-fed at
night. Parents who supplement their infant feeding with formula
under the impression that they will get more sleep should be
encouraged to continue breast-feeding.
AP Research:
Spanking
Spanking
Increases Risk of Relationship Violence and Mental Health
Problems in Later Years
Murray Straus, co-director of the Family
Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire, has
presented new research findings at the American Psychological
Association's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships.
Straus analyzed the results of four studies and found that
spanking and other corporal punishment by parents is associated
with an increased probability of verbal and physical coercion,
risky premarital relations, and masochistic behavior. To reduce
the use of corporal punishment, Straus recommends that the
American Psychological Association, the U.S. Children's Bureau,
and other related organizations publicize a recommendation that
parents should never spank.
